I should have taken the bus
My manager said I wasn’t showing enough ownership. I was the 4th employee. Half the office furniture was from my apartment. We argued for a while and I quit. Packed my desk into a cardboard box, said something about getting my life back, ordered a Waymo.
This was in SoMa. I lived in the Outer Sunset. It was going to cost like $45 but I wanted to leave without having to stand in the street outside waiting for the bus.
Car arrives. I get in. It does that weird fucked up thing where it starts to turn, changes its mind, short circuits and just stops moving. My manager comes down with my gym bag. I roll down the window and pathetically say thanks while he pushes it through.
He asks whether I could stay through Friday.
I say no and roll the window up, wanted an exit like Harvey in Suits.
Waymo still isn’t moving. I get out and try to lift my box off the seat. Bottom gives out. Everything goes onto the street.
I’m picking pens and paper off the street, trying to shove it all back into a broken box like a homeless person, then look up and realize the whole office is laughing at me.
